VIRTUAL EXHIBITION

Utopia Dreaming

Utopia, in the Central Desert of Australia, has emerged as a significant cultural centre for contemporary Aboriginal art. At the forefront of this movement stands Emily Kam Kngwarray.

Coinciding with the Kngwarray retrospective at Tate Modern, this exhibition from Aboriginal Art UK highlights the intergenerational impact of Utopia’s creative community. Central to this narrative are Kngwarray's sister-in-law Minnie Pwerle, whose expressive linear motifs echo ceremonial body painting; Minnie's daughter Barbara Weir, whose works explore memory, identity, and landscape; and Barbara’s daughter Charmaine Pwerle, who continues this legacy with a vibrant, contemporary voice. Alongside them, featured works by other esteemed Utopia artists reaffirm the region’s profound and ongoing contribution to Aboriginal art.
