Kukula McDonald is a Luritja artist from the renowned painting community of Papunya (Warumpl), located approximately 340 km west of Mparntwe (Alice Springs). Emerging from one of the most significant centres of contemporary Aboriginal art, Kukula has developed a distinctive and recognisable style.

Kukula primarily paints yellow-tailed and red-tailed black cockatoos, which she affectionately refers to as “yellow-bums” and “red-bums.” These striking native birds are known for their loud, expressive calls, strong pair bonds, and highly social behaviour, often travelling in large flocks across the desert. In many parts of Australia, black cockatoos are seen as significant cultural and environmental indicators, their movements tied to seasonal change and the availability of food sources. Kukula also depicts other native bird species, including sulphur-crested cockatoos and pink cockatoos. Earlier in her career, she became known for her unique and expressive paintings of wheelchairs, reflecting personal and community narratives.

Kukula has an intimate knowledge of her Country and knows where to find “big mobs” of the elusive black cockatoos. Her work reflects a close observation of desert life, from the subtle shifts in colour at waterholes and sunsets to the seasonal appearance of fruits and flowering plants.

In the background of many of her paintings, Kukula depicts Uttumpatu — the rocky outcrops and ridgelines that sit alongside the Papunya community. These formations are culturally significant and anchor her work in place, connecting her subjects to their ancestral landscape.

A defining feature of Kukula’s paintings is her ability to capture the playful and cheeky personalities of the cockatoos. Each bird is rendered with its own distinct expression, often suggesting relationships and interactions within the flock. As she paints, Kukula creates stories about the birds and their connections to one another — a process she deeply enjoys. This sense of joy and storytelling is palpable, radiating from her canvases and engaging the viewer.

Kukula McDonald’s work has been widely exhibited and collected, both nationally and internationally. Her artwork has also been featured on the cover of the publication First Notions: Stories Then and Now, further highlighting the cultural and artistic significance of her practice.
